The Osma Family

The Osma last name comes from the name Uxama which was part of the Celtic cities located in the mountain range of Cameros, province of Soria, on the borders of the Ucero River in Spain. In the primitive Christian time, it was believed to be a seat of a bishopric.

Pedro of Osma Gildemeister

He was born on the 4th of May of 1901 and passed away the 18th of September of 1967. He studied at Recoleta School and, later, got his degree as a lawyer at the University of San Marcos.

Without a doubt, his great vocation was the arts; he dedicated his whole life to them. In his house, without giving it the sense of a museum, he showed the important pieces of art that he acquired.

Pedro de Osma used to walk around his house with friend, stop before important works and explain their history through anecdotes.

His house was a meeting point where the high dignitaries and important characters met when they were in Peru. Numerous governments granted him high merit awards.

The House
Located in the old and traditional district of Barranco and under the shade of many ficus trees, the old residence of the Osma family can be found, built by Don Pedro de Osma y Pardo. An elevation of the construction from 1906 signed by the Engineer Santiago Basurco still remains.

There are two buildings that compose the house, one at the front and another at the back side. This last one was the dining room. Both buildings are French styled and eclectic per moments. Stained glass in the art nouveau style, ceilings of metal, wrought plaster and crystal chandeliers grace more than ten halls.

The buildings are surrounded by gardens with marble sculptures and spaces marked with palms and geraniums.
