The cradle of the ancestors of Don Gaspar de Osma y Tricio was Osma del Duero, where Burgo de Osma (Town of Osma) can be found. Its first prelate, after the Reconquest, was the French monk Pedro de Vituris who, by the year 1090, ordered the construction, at the other border of the Ucero river, in the district named El Burgo, of a primitive cathedral church that later was reconstructed by the Knight of the Señorio del Duero de Osma who turn it into the second most important cathedral of Spain. This Pedro de Vituris was later called Pedro de Osma, the same man that was sanctified like Saint Pedro de Osma. His tomb rests at the center of the former Capitulate Hall of the Cathedral of Burgo de Osma. The tomb is magnificent; it has a polychrome frieze that tells the story of the first encounter between the lord of Osma and the Bishop Pedro.
The ecclesiastical goods have always ignited the greed of secular powers. The church of Osma certainly wasn't very rich in temporal possessions; nevertheless, the little that it had was coveted by the one that ruled the city, a brutal knight that was more moor than Christian and who, not satisfied with having stripped the Church and the bishop, he imposed, in addition, great tributes to the faithful. At first San Pedro tried to sweet talk the knight; he requested he give back the patrimony of the poor men and stop tormenting his flock. The knight responded with an arrogant refusal. The bishop, righteously indignant, excommunicated him. This attempt was called “The Boldness of Pedro” by the knight and he swore, in his ferocious language, that he would “drink the blood of the traitor”.
Nevertheless, to attack the saint in the Burgo, where he was loved tenderly by his flock, seemed much too bold. He preferred to wait for an opportunity that would give him the saint without defense. This did not take long. One day the saint left the Episcopal city in order to start a visit to his diocese, the knight waited for him near the town of San Esteban de Gormaz, hoping to behead his victim. When the cortege of the saint was near and the assassin prepared himself to commit his sacrilegious crime he suddenly was undertaken by acute pains. He fell to the ground and wallowed in the dust with convulsive movements. The demon had empowered him. His men of arms surrounded him, shouting at him desperately. The bishop listened to their shouts and went to him and recognized who was twisting at his feet: his enemy. Without showing any emotion the pious shepherd kneeled himself, prayed by the unfortunate and cured him of the body and the soul. Since then the goods of the Church didn't have a defender as intrepid as the Señor de Osma (Mr. of Osma).
